Biography

Anthony Stewart Head is an English actor, singer, musician and writer. He was born in Camden Town, London on February 20, 1954. His father was documentary filmmaker Seafield Head and his mother was actress Helen Shingler. He has an older brother, Murray Head, who is also an actor and a singer-songwriter.

Anthony grew up in Hampton, Middlesex and attended Sunbury Grammar School in Surrey, where he performed in school plays. He went on to train at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and made his professional acting debut in the musical Godspell in 1977. He became a well-known face on British television in the 1980s for his part in the now iconic Nescafe Gold Blend commercials with Sharon Maughan (the success of which also transferred to American television, where the brand was known as Taster's Choice).

In 1997 he landed arguably his most beloved international role in the US TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (as Rupert Giles). Other notable TV roles have included Uther Pendragon in Merlin, the Prime Minister in Little Britain, Mr. Finch in Doctor Who, and most recently Rupert Mannion in Ted Lasso. His film credits include Repo! The Genetic OperaPercy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and the Academy Award-winning The Iron Lady, in which he played Geoffrey Howe.

On stage, Anthony has had leading roles at the National Theatre and in West End musicals Chess (as Freddie Trumper, a role previously played by his brother Murray) and The Rocky Horror Show (as Frank N Furter). He has also written and recorded his own music and has released two albums, Music for Elevators (2002) with George Sarah, and Staring at the Sun (2014).

Anthony lives near Bath, Somerset with his long-time partner Sarah Fisher, an animal behaviourist. They have two daughters, Emily and Daisy, who are both successful actors.
